What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. Chiropractic treatment is designed to remedy the cause of the problem and not just mask the pain and symptoms.

By restoring normal function to the musculoskeletal system Chiropractors can play a major part in relieving disorders, and  accompanying pain or discomfort, arising from accidents, stress, lack of exercise, poor posture and illness.

Mis-alignments of the vertebrae in the spine can cause the joints to press on the spinal nerves, leading to direct pain in the back and possibly "referred" pain in other parts of the body.

Your Chiropractor will carry out tests, to establish the cause of the pain, and will follow this with the most appropriate treatment technique which may involve manipulation of the joints and vertebrae in the back and neck to restore their mobility.

A substantial body of evidence exists in support of chiropractic treatment. In the UK, a Medical Research Council study in 1990 suggested that improvement in back-pain patients treated with chiropractic treatment was greater than that of patients referred for hospital physiotherapy.

In 1995, the UK's Clinical Standards Advisory Group recommended that the National Health Service refer more patients to practitioners specially trained in manipulation.

In several US studies, chiropractic was found to be so effective in relieving acute back pain that its use for this condition was endorsed in 1994 by the Federal Agency for Health Care Policy and Research.
